⚔ Samurai Vengeance

About the game

A free samurai action platformer that runs in a browser tab.

Samurai Vengeance is a free browser-based action platformer. You play a masterless samurai cutting through ninja, archers, shield-bearers and divebombing tengu across stages that get harder as you climb. There is nothing to download and nothing to install — it runs in the browser tab you already have open, on a phone or a desktop.

The combat

Four things make up the whole moveset, and the game is built around combining them under pressure rather than around having a long list of moves.

Hitting enemies without taking damage builds a combo multiplier, and the multiplier pays out in coins rather than just score — so pushing one more hit before you disengage is an actual wager.

How a run is structured

There are 1000 stages, grouped into ten chapters of a hundred.

ChapterStages
The Awakening1–100
Blood Fields101–200
The Siege201–300
Dark Forest301–400
Storm Pass401–500
The Citadel501–600
Ash Lands601–700
Crimson Peaks701–800
The Gauntlet801–900
Final Vengeance901–1000

Every tenth stage is a boss with two phases — it changes pattern and speeds up once you have taken it below half health. There are ten of them, from the Iron Oni at stage 10 through to Death Itself at stage 1000.

From stage 8 onward, roughly every seventh stage carries a modifier that changes one rule of the run: more enemies but weaker ones, everything gains a ranged attack, double damage taken and double coins, enemies arriving from above, or longer airtime on every jump. Boss stages never carry one.

Progression

Coins earned in a run are spent in the Dojo on five upgrades — health, damage, Ki generation, dash and parry — each capped at level five. Alongside that there are daily challenges, a rotating daily boss, achievements, and a global leaderboard.

Progress is saved locally in your browser without an account. Create one and it syncs across devices and puts you on the leaderboard.

Three difficulties

Mode
PeaceForgiving. Enemies hit softer and think slower.
WarriorThe intended balance.
DemonLethal. Faster enemies, heavier damage, little room to trade hits.

Technical

The whole game is HTML5 canvas and JavaScript in a single page, drawn in three layers so the parallax background, the action and the weather can run at different costs. Backgrounds rotate through seven scene palettes every five stages. It supports portrait and landscape on phones, with touch controls that re-lay out on rotation, and keyboard on desktop.
